Lutz could pull first NXN/Footlocker double - USATODAY.com

Craig Lutz has a chance to become the first runner to win the Nike and Foot Locker national cross country 5-kilometer titles in the same year. Lutz, from Marcus (Flower Mound, Texas), won the Nike Cross Nationals last weekend in Portland, Ore., finishing in a course-record 15 minutes, 9.2 seconds.

Two weeks ago, the junior won the Foot Locker South Regional in Charlotte in 14:32 to qualify for Saturday's Foot Locker Nationals at Balboa Park in San Diego. If he wins Saturday, it will be his third victory in as many weeks. He also won the Texas 5A championship Nov. 14.

One reason he might be peaking is he had to take 11 weeks off from running this summer after getting shin splints in his right leg.

"It was right at the beginning of when we do our base mileage," Lutz said. "I'm not a strong swimmer, but I did a lot of swimming, and I didn't lose a lot of fitness."
